Prof Ian James

Reader in Modern French Literature and Thought

I have worked extensively in contemporary French thought and its treatment of aesthetics and, in particular, on thinking about film and the visual image. I have published on Jean-Luc Nancy’s engagement with film via the work of the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami and on Nancy’s philosophical treatment of the image. I have also written critical-philosophical pieces on the relation Paul Virilio’s thought to visual culture and taught a seminar on Virilio and surveillance for the Screen Media MPhil programme.
