About: 

Filiz Yildirim studied History and French in a joint double degree at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germany) and University of Burgundy Dijon (France). In this framework, she also studied at Sherbrooke University Quebec (Canada). 

 

She went on to postgraduate study at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Conference Interpreting with the language combination German, French, English. During her master's degree, she integrated academic exchanges as an Erasmus student at University of Mons (Belgium) and Bosphorus University Istanbul (Turkey). She also spent a semester abroad at Monash University Melbourne (Australia).  

Preceding her move to Cambridge, Filiz Yildirim worked as a DAAD language assistant at the University of Alexandria, Egypt and taught a Memory Studies paper on “Sites of Memory in Turkey and elsewhere” at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.  

She also taught World History, Theory of Knowledge and German at a German IB school in Istanbul.  

Teaching interests: 

Within the scope of her DAAD Lektorat, Filiz Yildirim teaches advanced grammar courses, German through Media and Translation from English into German at the German section.  

For St John’s College and Gonville and Caius Colleges, she supervises students of all years for their Speaking and Use of German, Translation into German as well as German Text and Culture papers. 

Research interests: 

In addition to her research interests in German as a foreign language, Filiz Yildirim is interested in the field of Cultural Memory studies. In this context, she particularly focuses on identifying and analysing transnational and regional Sites of memory (Lieux de Mémoire) of historically marginalized groups.
