Mission

Cambridge Polish Studies has three primary objectives.

First, we are educating a talented cohort of Cambridge undergraduate students, giving them extensive knowledge of Polish culture, language and history. These students will bring a deeper understanding of Poland’s crucial position in a changing Europe to their future roles as leaders in business, industry, and government.

We firmly believe that the study of language and literature forms the foundation of the cultural understanding required to foster political and economic relationships.

Second, we are raising the profile of Polish culture and the study of Poland in the United Kingdom through a rich cycle of public events. These events cater to both academic audiences and the general public. We have staged guest lectures with prominent public intellectuals, film screenings, and lively debates of topical issues involving Poland and the wider region of Central and Eastern Europe.

We also hold yearly academic conferences, inviting leading experts from around the world.

Third, we are producing and supporting world-leading research on subjects related to Poland and its region. Research is conducted by faculty members, PhD candidates and MPhil students.

In 2017, Cambridge Polish Studies established a partnership with the University of Warsaw through the "Artes Liberales" Faculty.

Lecturer in Polish Studies Dr Stanley Bill talks about the aims of the new Cambridge initiative:
