People Power: Polish Solidarity and the Ukrainian Revolution

Cambridge Polish Studies and Cambridge Ukrainian Studies presented a public symposium on the connections between two popular revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe: the Polish "Solidarity" revolution of the 1980s and the "Maidan" movements of post-1991 independent Ukraine.

Sexmission: Reproduction on Film

As part of the Cambridge Science Festival, Cambridge Polish Studies presents a special screening of the classic Polish science fiction comedy film Sexmission ( Seksmisja , 1984) within the series "Reproduction on Film: Sex, Secrets and Lies". The screening will be followed by a discussion featuring Karolina Wigura, editor of Kultura Liberalna .

As part of the 'Sense of Place' lecture series, the Cambridge Committee for Russian and East European Studies (CamCREES) and the Department of Slavonic Studies hosted Professor David Frick from University of California Berkeley for a lecture entitled ' The City Destroyed, the City Restored: Wilno in the Mid-Seventeenth Century' .

Olga Tokarczuk: Writing Polish Identity

Olga Tokarczuk is perhaps Poland's most decorated and eminent contemporary novelist. Cambridge Polish Studies welcomed her to Sidney Sussex College for an evening of readings from her work (in English and Polish) and discussion. Olga Tokarczuk was accompanied by the main translator of her books into English, Antonia Lloyd-Jones.

In this public forum, we will discuss various aspects of the current situation for Poles living in the UK, examining the triumphs and challenges of the last ten years, before looking to the uncertain future. What have Poles brought to British culture? What prompted them to migrate? How many wish to return? What kind of discrimination do they face? How do the British view Poles? What effect has migration had in Poland? How do Poles understand the current refugee crisis in Europe?

The M. B. Grabowski Symposium with Professor Norman Davies at the William Mong Hall, Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge on 27 October 2015 from 6:30pm. Professor Davies presented a talk entitled 'The Army of General Anders: Legions from a Lost World'. The talk was followed by questions and discussion on Anders' Army and its legacy.
