The Schröder Ambassadors

The German Section, with the support of the Schröder Fund, is delighted to announce the appointment of eight new Schröder Ambassadors. The new team in 2023-24 is made up of first-year, second-year and fourth-year students: James Dickinson, Ama Otuo, Luckshika Sutharsan, Beth Woodward, Sophie Clare, Zoe Zhang, Brénainn Sheppard and Georgie Sharpe.

The new Ambassadors will be sharing their passion for German language and culture with school students up and down the country, encouraging applications to university courses, and especially to Cambridge. The German Section at Cambridge welcomes applicants who want to take up German from scratch as well as those who are currently studying German to A-level or equivalent

Georgie Sharpe

Hi, I’m Georgie, a second-year German and Spanish student at Magdalene College. This year I am taking papers on modern German culture and the history and development of the Hispanic languages. As an ex-ab initio student, I have found learning German from scratch at university a greatly rewarding experience. I therefore wish to encourage prospective applicants to consider studying German, even if they have no background in the language!

Ama Otuo

I’m Ama, a fourth year German and Spanish student at Murray Edwards. This year I am doing modules on German history and thought as well as a dissertation about Women artists of the Holocaust and how their expressions of self are placed in collective memory culture. As an ambassador I hope to boost our social media presence, extending our outreach and working with everyone to show how rewarding learning German can prove to be!

James Dickinson

Hi, I’m James, a fourth-year German and Spanish student at Trinity College. This year I’m taking papers on modern German literature and thought. I have loved German Studies at Cambridge so far and am very excited share my experience to help prospective students with their applications. I’m also especially looking forward to sharing my passion for German with younger students in the workshops and visits we have planned.

Luckshika Sutharsan

Hi! I’m Luckshika, a second-year Germanist and Russianist at Newnham. This year I’ve taken papers on modern German culture and 19th century Russian literature. As a woman of colour in MML and German, my personal aim is to encourage more diversity within the MML cohort and working specifically in access outreach, aiding prospective students to consider MML and German more seriously.

Beth Woodward

Hi, I‘m Beth. I’m a second-year MML student at Fitzwilliam College doing German and Spanish Post A-Level. This year, alongside literature and history papers, I've started learning Portuguese. I really love learning languages and communicating and I'm super excited to be involved in German outreach projects! I hope to share my passion for languages with fellow students and prospective students.

Sophie Clare

Hi, I'm Sophie, a fourth-year French and German scholar at Christ's College.  This year I'm taking papers on medieval literature and writing my dissertation on modern German history, after spending six months in Berlin for my year abroad.  I'm a first-generation student and enjoy sharing my passion for German studies with prospective applicants from similar backgrounds.  I am excited to share my academic and extra-curricular experiences through the German section's social media, as well as co-ordinating the Undergraduate Conference which I enjoyed as a committee member and attendee in my first and second years. My favourite German words are Pfand and stoß-lüften, especially trying to explain them in English!

Brénainn Sheppard

Hi, I'm Brénainn and I'm a first-year studying German and Italian. I'm really enjoying getting stuck into various topics including German history, literature and thought, as well as Italian cinema. I hope to encourage other modern linguists, especially those from the north of England and from disadvantaged backgrounds, to consider their study of German at university.

Zoe Zhang

I'm Zoe and I'm a fourth year History and German student. I studied German at school from Year 7 onwards at GCSE and A-level, and was drawn to the History and Modern Languages joint honours degree due to the possibility of integrating my historical interests with my love of the German language and culture. My subject specialisms are mediaeval political philosophy and German idealism, and I enjoy painting and folding origami models in my free time.
