Sykes Postgraduate Research Studentships in Italian (Masters)

The Sykes postgraduate research studentship in Italian with the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL) at Cambridge is available to outstanding UK candidates applying for courses starting in October 2023.  The studentship is funded by a generous donation from the Keith Sykes Fund and is usually combined with matching funding from Cambridge colleges or from the Cambridge Vice-Chancellor's and International Trusts.

There are three courses with Italian pathways in MMLL: European, Latin American and Comparative Literature and Cultures; Theoretical and Applied Linguistics; Film and Screen Studies.

Studentships will cover fees up to the standard UK / Home level and maintenance costs, either wholly or in ‘mosaic-funding’ combination with other grants and loans.  It is a condition of application that candidates apply for all other Cambridge grants for which they are eligible (https://www.mmll.cam.ac.uk/graduates/applying). All MMLL candidates with a predominant research interest in Italian will automatically be considered for a Sykes Studentship, subject to this condition.

Candidates should apply online for the relevant course in the normal way: https://www.mmll.cam.ac.uk/graduates/applying. All shortlisted candidates will be interviewed.

Before applying, all potential candidates are strongly encouraged to contact their potential supervisor and/or the current Postgraduate Teaching and Examinations Officer (PTEO) in Italian: Prof Adam Ledgeway (anl21@cam.ac.uk)

NOTE ON DEADLINES: Application deadlines vary:

- for US candidates also applying for Gates scholarships, the deadline falls in mid-October.

- for other candidates seeking funding, the deadline falls in early December (see here for more information on dates and details of central funding competitions)

NOTE ON COLLEGES: All students at Cambridge are affiliated to a Department or Faculty and also to a college of the University.

Sykes studentships are hosted by Selwyn College and Robinson College (click on the relevant College link for information).

In cases where studentships are hosted by a particular college, successful candidates may be required to move to the designated college in order to take up their studentships; but at this stage, they are free to indicate another college preference if they wish, as requested on the application system. College affiliations of the Professors and Lecturers in Italian are indicated on the following webpage: http://www.mmll.cam.ac.uk/italian/research-summary
