Research
My PhD dissertation examines the role of Russian literary folklore (viz. learned literary works styled as folktales) in the construction of national and cultural identity during the Russian nineteenth century (c. 1760–1900). Investigating political movements (the Decembrists and Official Nationality), cultural movements (the Slavophiles, and early anti-Westernisation trends), literary movements (Romanticism), and the emerging academic disciplines of folklore studies and ethnography, I examine how literary folklore both projected evolving notions of identity and helped to shape their formation, leading to a cyclic evolution both of this literary phenomenon and of the (self-)definition of Russian identity.
