Part IA

Option A and Option B

In your first year of study, which is known as Part IA, the papers you will be required to take are determined by your knowledge of your chosen languages on entry. In Russian the majority of students are beginners and near-beginners, while between a quarter and a third have already studied the language at school to A-level (or equivalent standard), i.e., post A-level. It is an indication of the quality of what is known as the ab initio course (and of those who take it) that, in their second year of study, students take the same language classes as incoming A-level students in their post A-level course and frequently go on to achieve outstanding results in their Final Examinations.

All Part IA students must attend the relevant introductory meetings at the start of Michaelmas term. The timetable of meetings will be published via the Online Timetable, circulated by Directors of Studies and via email reminder by the Department of Slavonic Studies.

The Section invites all freshers to a Section welcome party each year on Tuesday before the Michaelmas teaching term begins, at 5.30 pm. Details will be circulated by email.
