Michaelmas Term Courses

The following main courses are provided by the Linguistics section of the MMLL Faculty and consist of lectures shared with Part II undergraduate students. Please note that these courses are subject to staff availability that may vary slightly from year to year.

Students choose four courses from the below.  Of these four, students are required to attend at least one taught course in either Phonetics or Phonology (depending on the availability in a given academic year) and at least one in Syntax or Semantics & Pragmatics.

  • Computational Linguistics (Li18)

The following courses can be taken within the Linguistics section as directed reading, dependent on staff availability and student interest.

  • Philosophy of Language
  • Language Death
  • Dialect Syntax

The Linguistics section is part of the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL) which also includes the sections of French, Italian & Modern Greek, German & Dutch, Slavonic, and Spanish & Portuguese. It may be possible to take the following courses from other sections in MMLL. Please note that all of these courses are wholly subject to staff availability, student interest, and space on the course.

Several other faculties offer courses closely related to Linguistics, so it may be worth checking their websites. Students interested in pursuing them should first contact the Course Director and, following their approval, approach the relevant lecturer. Please note that the faculty is unable to comment on the availability of staff and courses in other faculties.
