24th February 2023 marked the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and, at the MMLL Library, we wanted to show our ongoing support for Ukraine.
Olha, who had just finished her time as our temporary Slavonic specialist, curated an exhibition of writing and photography exploring lived experiences of the war and the historical background of aggressions against Ukraine. The display was interspersed with quotes from ordinary people on the ground in Ukraine, telling of the horrors which have become their reality.
Free ‘I stand with Ukraine’ pin badges were available for all those wanting to show their support, and details around the library foyer promoted local initiatives to mark the anniversary, from lectures on the war and on Ukrainian language, to vigils and a touring exhibition of Ukrainian art.
