About:

The question of religious belief occupies a critical place in French intellectual history. Marie Chabbert’s research explores the directions that the debates surrounding religious freedom and pluralism have taken in twentieth and twenty-first century France in the face of the two World Wars, the dismemberment of colonial empires, the emergence of globalisation and the so-called ‘return of religion’. In her doctoral thesis, Dr Chabbert has demonstrated that, through their engagements with the concept of the death of God, Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, and Jean-Luc Nancy query the boundaries between the religious and the profane, theism and atheism, thereby inaugurating new perspectives for thinking the increased fluidity of the religious in the postsecular world. Building on these findings, she is now interrogating what she identifies as a rapprochement between religious faith and scientific reasoning in contemporary French thought as a result of the growing postsecular and ecological demand to reconsider the way in which we understand ourselves and our place in the universe.

Dr Chabbert holds a PhD in French Studies from the University of Oxford, an MSc in Social Anthropology from the London School of Economics, an MPhil in Comparative European Culture from the University of Cambridge, and a Double-BA in Politics and Lettres Modernes from Sciences Po Paris and La Sorbonne Paris IV.

As part of a wider commitment to public engagement in the humanities, Marie Chabbert works as a freelance journalist for the French newspaper Le Monde and is a regular contributor to the intellectual magazine Esprit. She is also an Executive Committee member of the European Interfaith Youth Network of Religions for Peace, the largest international coalition of representatives from the world’s religions dedicated to promoting multi-religious cooperation for peace. In January 2021, she was chosen by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and United Nations Counter-Terrorism Center to become one of the 18 “Young Religious Leader” from Europe and the Middle-East in their Edin (Empowering Dialogue & Interfaith Networks) programme.
