Year Abroad Project FAQs

Given the current climate and the uncertainty due to Covid-19, it’s understandable that many of you who have recently returned from your Year Abroad will have questions about the Year Abroad Project. We’ve created what we hope will be a useful resource of frequently asked questions.

Who should I contact about Year Abroad Project queries?

In the first instance, you should contact your DoS about any issues regarding the YAP, such as finding a supervisor or any problems with supervisor. (You can also contact your College Tutor if your DoS is unresponsive or unable to help).

Do footnotes count towards the word count in my YAP?

Yes, footnotes do count, as do image/map captions, quotations in the main body of the text, introduction and translators notes (if doing a Translation Project), and any chapter and/or section headings.

The bibliography and anything in the agreed appendices will not be included in the word count, nor will the title page of your project or the table of contents if you decide to use one. You will find further exclusions in the YAP handbook.

What about referencing?

There is no specific style required; we add a link on the webpage to MHRA as a standard style guide. http://www.mhra.org.uk/style/

How can I find a supervisor?

Your DoS can help you with identifying a suitable supervisor; you can also visit the relevant section webpages that include lists of teaching staff and their research interests.

What if I’m unsure about what topic to focus on?

If you’re not sure where to start it’s advisable to approach a lecturer or convenor for a paper you took in Part IB who could offer guidance about similar topics you enjoyed from the lecture series. As a general rule of thumb, however, you should always initiate the brainstorming process with your DoS, preferably in Lent Term of your second year.

Will my YAP count if I switch from MML to another Tripos in my final year?

This will depend on the specifics of the Tripos you’re switching into but you will need to be prepared that the YAP may not count in your new Tripos.

Where can I find sample YAPs from previous years?

There is an archive available on Google Drive – if you would like access please contact facultyoffice@mmll.cam.ac.uk

Where are important deadlines for the YAP (Tripos 2024)?

Please refer to the YAP handbook on the Part II Moodle page. For MML please use this page.  For HML please use this page.

How do I submit my YAP?

The Faculty Office collect YAP submissions via Moodle. Full information for students submitting in October 2023 will appear by September at the latest.

Please submit your YAP on the part II Moodle page. For MML please use this page.  For HML please use this page.

Please ensure that you submit your YAP and the declaration form. You can find links to submit both of these on the Moodle page. Please read the instructions on the Moodle page as well.
