Juan Martinez-Gil holds a degree in Hispanic Studies from the Universitat de València, a Master's degree in Teacher Training (focusing on Catalan and Spanish) from the Universitat Miguel Hernández, and a Master's degree in Construction and Representation of Cultural Identities, with Distinction, from the Universitat de Barcelona. He is currently finishing his PhD at the Universitat Jaume I, on transgender representation during Spanish Transition in Catalan and Spanish literature and culture.

His research interests include Catalan, Spanish, and Spanish-American literature and culture from the perspectives of Gender and Queer Studies, as well as Literary Theory and Discourse Analysis. He has completed international stays in Mexico City (UNAM) and Michigan (UofM). He is currently a Batista i Roca Fellow, a position held by Fitzwilliam College and Institut Ramon Llull.
