Call for Applications - British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships 2020

The Faculty welcomes applications for British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships. The aim of the British Academy in making these awards is to offer opportunities for outstanding early career researchers to strengthen their experience of research and teaching in a university environment. The primary emphasis is on completion of a significant piece of publishable research, which will be assisted by full membership of an academic community of established scholars working in similar fields.

Selection of those candidates whose application to the British Academy will be supported by the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages will take place by competition. The Faculty will then provide support in the preparation of the final application to the BA.

Applicants should be aware that there is a three-stage approval process for these prestigious fellowships, including approval and ranking at Faculty level, approval and ranking at University level and final approval by the British Academy. If you are interested in applying, please discuss with the relevant Head of Section, and/or with the scholar whose work most closely aligns with your proposed research, as soon as possible. Please see the MMLL Research pages for more details.

Applications to the Faculty should consist of the following:

1. a brief CV (not exceeding two sides), including the dates on which you took your PhD viva and on which you were awarded the PhD;

2. a list of major publications (not exceeding one side);

3. a brief statement (maximum 250 words) of current research;

4. a detailed statement of proposed research (maximum 750 words). Please address the following:

  • the research problem(s) you are seeking to address and why it is distinctive;
  • how your proposed research will tackle this research problem(s) - its design and methodology;
  • how your proposed research will significantly change the established landscape;
  • the appropriateness of Cambridge (and your proposed mentor) for your project.

5. two letters of reference, one from outside Cambridge.

Final applications including references must reach Dr Anna Frohnwieser, MMLL Research Administrator, by 5pm on Thursday 27th August 2020.
