A Midsummer Night's Dream, translated by János Arany – critical edition by Dr Julia Paraizs

Dr Julia Paraizs has recently published a critical edition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the highly acclaimed and popular translation (1864) of the renowned Hungarian poet, János Arany.

This bilingual edition provides a newly edited text from the translator’s autograph papers alongside the English source text used by the translator. A comprehensive textual analysis and a foot-of-the-page textual apparatus record and discuss English and Hungarian variants in different documents, including authorial manuscripts, print editions, and theatrical promptbooks. It also publishes the notes and textual variants of Nicolaus Delius's first edition which was an important source for Arany. The introductory chapters focus on the nineteenth-century Hungarian cultural context of the translation and provide information on the date of composition, textual sources, critical reception, publication history, and early performance history. The edition is complemented by a commentary which explains word-meaning and allusions in the translated text as the translation is replete with textual references to classical and Hungarian literary texts.
