Congratulations to Jessica Maratsos on her new book 'Pontormo and the Art of Devotion in the Renaissance Italy'.

Please join Jessica Maratsos and the UMB Catherine Frisone Scott Center for its first event of the spring semester, on Zoom.

On 10th February 2023, from 20:00-22:00 (GMT) (15:00 - 17:00 EST) Jessica Maratsos will give a book talk with Stuart Lingo.

The talk will consider the Florentine artist Jacopo Carrucci, known as Pontormo, as the creator of some of the most visually striking religious images of the Renaissance. Challenging standard illusionistic conventions, these paintings mark a unique contribution into the complex relationship between artistic innovation and Christian traditions in the early sixteenth century. Prof. Maratsos argues that Pontormo employed stylistic variation for devotional purposes and translated a wide spectrum of devotional culture in ways that prompt a critical rethinking of Renaissance devotional art.
