'Escape, Community, Resistance, Memory. Italian Populations and Allied Prisoners of War’.
We are pleased to announce a new research project and grant launched in the Italian Section, to run until 2027. Sponsored by the Monte San Martino Trust, which commemorates Italian civilians and communities who helped Allied prisoners of war during World War Two (https://msmtrust.org.uk/), the project builds on the recent donation of the Trust’s archive to the University Library.
The grant will support a postdoctoral researcher and a series of academic and public events, dedicated to the networks of contact between soldiers and civilian communities in the turbulent years of the war and the civil war in Italy after 1943, their history and memory. Many of the same issues are still at stake today across the world’s conflict zones. The project will explore historical and cultural material and archives, linking with research sponsored by the Trust carried out by the Istituto Parri in Italy and the National Archives in Washington (NARA).
The project is led by Prof Robert S. C. Gordon (rscg1@cam.ac.uk). The search for the postdoctoral position has been launched here: https://www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/45574/
