Jessica Goodman is a Junior Research Fellow in French, with a particular interest in eighteenth-century literature and culture. Her DPhil thesis, entitled 'La gloire et le malentendu: Goldoni and the Comédie-Italienne, 1760-93', was completed in 2013. Her new project, 'Literary Monuments', studies evocations of authors in the genre of the dialogue des morts. It explores this commemoration of the author through textual means, examining how such texts draw on and reimagine an individual's reputation in life, how they construct the social value of literature for their writers and audiences, and how they relate to new cultures of mourning and memorialisation in the late 18th and early 19th century.
