The Hospitality of Translation: A Conversation with Souleymane Bachir Diagne

1

Date: Wednesday, 26 November, 6:00pm Venue: Peterhouse Theatre, University of Cambridge Registration: https://luma.com/ki56uhz7

The French Section and Peterhouse are delighted to host Souleymane Bachir Diagne, Professor Emeritus of French and Philosophy at Columbia University and Visiting Fellow of Peterhouse, for a conversation on his latest work, De langue à langue: L’hospitalité de la traduction (Albin Michel, 2024), and its English translation From Language to Language: The Hospitality of Translation (Other Press, 2024).

In this deeply humanist and often personal meditation, Professor Diagne explores translation as both a philosophical act and an ethical encounter — a way of offering hospitality from one language to another, and of imagining a shared humanity across difference.

The event will be chaired by Dr Doyle D. Calhoun, University Assistant Professor of Francophone Postcolonial Studies and Fellow of Peterhouse.

This conversation will be of particular interest to students and staff working in French, translation, and world literature.
