Statement from Director of Slavonic Studies on attack on Ukraine

The Director of the Slavonic Studies Section, Dr Stanley Bill, today issued a statement to the departmental community on Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

I write to you in the light of the terrible events unfolding in the region we study.

I know all of us will want to join the international chorus of voices condemning the Kremlin's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. I do so unequivocally and in the strongest terms. Multiple colleagues have reached out to me to express their own condemnation and dismay. Above all, our thoughts will be with our colleagues and friends in and from Ukraine. We also think of colleagues in and from Russia equally horrified by these events.

I call on the international community to support Ukraine in the face of this unprovoked aggression.

We remain committed in the Slavonic Studies Section to the production of knowledge that fosters mutual understanding and peaceful relations in Europe. Today our work and studies across multiple languages and cultures are more urgent than ever.

We will continue to monitor the development of this attack on Ukraine and its impacts on our community.
