Prof Andreu Mas-Colell is Professor Emeritus of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. He also taught at Harvard (1981-1995) and Berkeley (1972-1981). He is the author of the famous graduate textbook Microeconomic Theory (1994), among other numerous works in the field.
In his talk, Prof Mas-Colell will discuss the concept of Knowledge Economy using Catalonia as an example. Prof Mas-Colell is an expert on the matter both in theory and in practice, as he served as General Secretary of the European Research Council (2009-2010) and Minister of Economy and Knowledge of the Government of Catalonia (2010-2015).
Abstract: The talk will be non-technical. I will review the prospects for the Catalan economy to become a high-productivity economy in the context of the EU. To this effect, I will expand on the current state of the economy, on the challenges (with a particular emphasis on university and research matters), on the difficulties and, finally, on the uncertainties, but also opportunities, generated by the evolution of the Spanish and Catalan political situations.
